So we'll get the keys in mid-June and that's when I'll finally be able to get some bids from contractors for the different ideas I have! Can't wait to share them with you!Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06520199684836826209noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2796642315326266217.post-33277576382701762922015-12-16T08:43:00.000-08:002015-12-16T08:43:50.329-08:00What Would You Do with. . . Red Lipstick?Well guys, I think this is my last round of hosting WWYD. I love doing it! But since I'm not blogging regularly I often forget until the morning of, and I have orders to fill and it just ends up crazy town. Plus I'm having a baby next month!! Yay for having my lungs back!
This month we decided to do festive Decemer make up with RED LIPSTICK!! I love it! I don't wear much eye make up, because as a blonde I worry too much that I'll become Mimi from The Drew Carey Show. If I'm going to play up my lips, which I love to do, I have to keep it simple with the eyes.
Anyway, we went to see Tran Siberian Orchestra last month (my fourth time! Such an awesome show!!) and I used it as a chance to dress up "fancy" for the holidays. As fancy as maternity clothes will allow anyway. . .
Last year my mother-in-law decided not to make a whole turkey and make just a turkey breast instead. Dark turkey meat is my reason for living. So I had to make my own turkey. Which left us with A LOT of white meat turkey to use up. I ended up loving the ease of throwing a dinner together using left over turkey.
I made a pot of gravy, added some shredded turkey and poured it over toast with a side of mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce.
I usually make this vegetarian but it was really good with some shredded turkey added in!

Turkey Enchilada Casserole

Another mexican meal I usually make vegetarian but it's fun to change it up and add some chunked turkey. I mix cheese, diced olives, diced onions and chunked turkey and layer it with red enchilada sauce and corn tortillas. I used to fry the tortillas, stuff them, roll them and then pour sauce over the top, but you know what??? They taste just the same when you layer them and they're like 100x easier!

What do you like to do with left over turkey? This year we'll be in CA with my vegetarian family. I'll make a turkey for me and Adam and probably my brother. But I kinda want to buy one just to make at home in Utah and use for leftovers!

Next month Aubrey and I will be playing with red lipstick for the holidays!! Join in and show us your look!

My favorite scripture is two words "Jesus wept". As a kid I thought that may be the most worthless scripture in the bible. Two words?? And I'm sure Jesus wept several times in his life, why did this one merit a verse? Was John trying to meet his quota of verses?

Later when I studied the context of the verse I found profound comfort and love in those two words. Jesus wept with Mary and Martha. Their brother had died and they were grieving. And while I'm sure Jesus was aware of what he was about to do, raise Lazarus from the dead, he did not discount their feelings, their grief. He mourned with them.

I had mixed emotions, like many of my friends LDS or not, about the LDS handbook policy change that stated children of same-sex marriage could not be given a name and blessing on the records of the church (different than a blessing of comfort or healing) or baptized until age 18. I took time to read and listen to sources I can trust, and I now feel peace. But like Jesus, like our baptismal covenants, I will mourn with those that mourn. If it's still something that is bringing you heartache, my heart aches with yours. I will hold your hand and sit with you and you are welcome to come to church (or anywhere) with me.

I hope that my church is a place where all feel welcome, to feel the love of our Savior and learn more about Him. While there may be a right and a wrong, none of us are perfect and all are welcome.Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06520199684836826209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2796642315326266217.post-25885951534111908212015-10-14T06:00:00.000-07:002015-10-14T06:00:03.088-07:00What Would You Do With. . . Orange??One of the most fun things about fall is decorating! How do you decorate for fall? I'm guessing 9/10 chances you're using the color orange somewhere. Aubrey and I decided it would be fun to show you how we're using the color orange this month!

Last year I made a cute burlap banner to use on my hexagon shelves and this year I'm showing you how I added the color orange to my shelves to bring a little fall cheer.

I fell in love with this cute fox at Target (of course!) and so did my kids! I decided we would splurge and get him, but that he would strictly be a decoration, not a toy. My kids are swimming in stuffed animals and this one was too cute to be a toy. (It really isn't made to be a toy either) The bright red-orange flowers are from IKEA.

Olivia and I painted jars with orange paint two years ago I believe. We put a tea light inside and it's very pretty when lit. You can also do this with glue and orange tissue paper, and then glue black cutouts on top.

We have the best babysitter and she always brings awesome crafts for my kids. This wooden craft pumpkins was painted by Olivia. She did a little bit better job than Axel on her pumpkin so I chose to display hers. (I did try both but it was difficult to balance the shelves with two pumpkins haha) These orange flowers are also from IKEA.

So last Sunday Olivia and I made baked apples! I didn't use a recipe, just my favorite ingredients. I cut the apples into quarters and dolloped cinnamon honey butter (2T butter, 1/4c honey and how every much cinnamon you want. At Olivia's request we added a bit of nutmeg. She loves fall spices) Then I couldn't help myself to drizzle a little more honey and sprinkle some cinnamon on top.

After 15 minutes I pulled them out and flipped all the apples over. The honey and butter had melted and pooled on the bottom of the pan so I wanted the cut side of the apples to soak in that goodness. I think I baked them at 350 for 45 minutes.

We pulled them out of the oven and then went on a walk around the block. They're hot like lava, so they were still really warm when we got back 30 minutes later. And you cannot buy a candle that will make your house smell as good as these apples.

They would be AMAZING with ice cream but we just ate them alone and the kids could not get enough of them! (I'm really trying to watch my junk food intake now that I'm feeling a little better this pregnancy. Trying and mostly failing but not this time!)

Do you have a killer apple recipe?? Link up below! And join us next month when we tell you what we would do with the color orange! My husband has informed me that he's going all out with Halloween decorations so he might just do the whole project for me haha!

I don't remember which one of us suggested paint for August, but I knew right away that I wanted to paint one of the rooms in my house. I tried to use our "gold" theme last summer to get Olivia's room painted (it will be white with a gold design on one wall. . . I think!) but it didn't work.

This month I planned to paint the Saturday before What Would You Do Wednesday. And I was bummed when our day got too busy to paint. Another month of phoning it in, I thought. Then I realized I was looking at the wrong Wednesday!! Hahaha I still had a week and a half.

So I did it!! I painted my kid/guest bathroom Aloof Gray (by Sherwin Williams, but I had Glidden at Home Depot color match it) I should probably be the spokesperson for Aloof Gray. I love it so so so much. It's a gray that definitely doesn't turn blue when you put it on the walls. And it's really calm. You might not even notice it's gray unless you see it next to some bright white, which is why I decorate with so much white :)

(excuses excuses: This bathroom gets zero natural light and is super tiny so it's hard to get a good angle! Okay enough of that)

With about $30 at IKEA and Joann Craft I got some new accessories and now I just really love this space. The pictures just don't do it justice (pretty much I can only take pictures in perfect light) I need a couple of awesome art pieces to go above the toilet and towel rack, but other wise I'm happy with it!

What would you do with paint?? Link up your post below!
Next month is APPLES!! If every month had a food, I think September would be apples. It's just the perfect way to kick off fall. :)

It's that one time a month I still blog! Aubrey and I are talking about fancy drinks for summer. Neither of us drink alcohol and so I know for me, I sometimes feel left out of the fancy drink group.

But since I'm pregnant, not a lot sounds good to me right now, so I'm going to fall back on one of my favorites, my frozen lemonade.

I love making this in a magic bullet because the recipes is for an individual serving (I was single for a looooong time) and the magic bullet is perfect for that. That way everyone can personalize their own (adding berries, not adding berries. . . ). But I made it for years in a regular blender and its still awesome.

1/3 c lemon juice
1/4 c sugar (a couple tablespoons more if you add strawberries)
1/4 c water
2-3 strawberries (optional)
as much ice as it takes to get thick. . . like 4-5 cubes? It just depends of the size of your ice. You can always add more if its too liquid.

BLEND! Enjoy!

What do you love to make in the summer?

(Next month we're talking about what would you do with . . . paint! Join us!)

I always think of the time between Memorial Day and Independence Day as the patriotic season. And since I've moved to Utah where the 24th of July is celebrated (when the Mormon pioneers first came to the Salt Lake Valley) it goes on even longer! So Aubrey and I decided it would be fun to do some projects with red, white and blue to show our patriotic side.

I've never been one for holiday decor, except for Fall and Christmas. So instead of making something for my house, I made something for my kids! (And your kids if you want! ;) )
I love that having two holidays in July means my kids will get good use out of these, but honestly they're so cute they can be worn any time! All of these items are for sale in my shop starting July 1 (I'm on summer break right now!) That wont be in time for July 4, but you can still rock it all of July!! :)

Next month we're doing a fun summer drink! We don't drink alcohol and so I always feel left out when it comes to pretty fancy drinks. Let's change that next month!

And August we're doing a paint project. Any kind of project that you used paint with!!
Strawberries???It is time for another installment of What Would You Do with my girl Aubrey, also known as the only time I ever blog any more.
This month we're talking STRAWBERRIES. You guys. This is my favorite food of all time. Except when my favorite food is perfectly ripe freshly picked peaches. But according to the Miss Lancaster Pageant 2001, my favorite food is strawberries, so that's usually what I tell people.

So of course, I have SEVERAL recipes I want to share with you today.

First, my strawberry lemonade slush. I wrote this frozen lemonade recipe when I was in college, but it was my friend Tiffanie that came up with the idea to add strawberries. She's a genius.

1/3 c lemon juice
1/4 c sugar (you can do 3 T if you like it less sweet)
1/4 c water
2-3 strawberries
as
much ice as it takes to get thick. . . like 4-5 cubes? It just depends
of the size of your ice. You can always add more if its too liquid.

BLEND! Enjoy!

Second, low calorie strawberry shortcake. I made this recipe soon after Olivia was born and I was working to lose some baby weight. I have found that I lose the most weight when I avoid all processed foods regardless of calories. But if you like to count calories or maybe induldge in a processed food treat on occasion, here is a recipe for you ;)

Cupcake: (I broke down a cake
mix into a smaller portion, because you KNOW what happens if you have
extra cake lying around the house. . . and you're hungry. . . )
1 c Betty Crocker white cake mix (put the remainder of the cake mix in a Ziploc bag and back into the box)
1 egg white
2 T sugar free applesauce
1/3 c + 1 T water

Mix
all ingredients, beat on medium speed for 1 1/2 minutes. Spoon into 8
cupcake liners. Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes. I let them cool,
kept two for our dessert and put the rest in the freezer for another
day. Because of the applesauce, these cupcakes will go bad faster than
regular. I guess I could have made an even SMALLER batch, but I just
didn't want to figure how to break down 1 egg white.
Cupcake: 100 calories

Strawberry topping:
2 cups fresh strawberries cut in half or fourths
2 T sugar (I'm going to try just 1 T next time)

Place
strawberries in a bowl and sprinkle with sugar. Use two knives working
like scissors to cut the strawberries into smaller pieces. The sugar
will help draw out the strawberry's natural juices and make a really
good topping.
1/2 c of topping: 45 calories

Whipped Topping:
1/2 c evaporated milk
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 T powdered sugar (must use powdered)

Place
milk in a mixing bowl and place in the freezer until ice crystals form
around the edges of the milk. (Consider freezing your beaters as well)
Mix with a hand mixer on high for 1 minute until frothy. Add vanilla
and sugar gradually. Mix on high for 2 more minutes until stiff. Serve
immediately. (This can only be used on cool or cold desserts. It will
melt on anything hot or warm) Makes 2 cups.
1/4 c whipped topping: 25 calories

Next month we're doing the colors red, white and blue in anticipation of Independence Day!!!

Make sure you link up your strawberry posts!!
Welcome to the one day a month I still blog! You can always follow me on instagram at @shopolivethethings or @olive_thethings if you totes miss me. I post a lot more there :)

Aubrey and I are asking you (and each other!) "What would you do with a floral print?"

I don't have a lot of florals in my closet, but I do love them for spring. I needed (still a work in progress actually) a wardrobe overhaul soooo bad. So I headed to the thrift store for some floral print fun. Check out @thedailymer on instagram to see my awesome friend Meredith and her thrifting genius. I was hoping to have some of her luck/fashion sense when I went shopping.

I think I did pretty good! This was my only floral print item haha! I have like 10000 pajama pants but these were so soft and I love the color. Maybe I could make them into a maxi skirt? Or more likely I'll just keep them to lounge in.

Gold Glitter??Happy March!! Can you believe how fast the year is going! And I thought last year went fast. Every year is faster, I tell ya.

This month Aubrey and I are playing with gold glitter!

Initially I wanted to get some really cool gold glitter fabric and make a limited edition item for my shop. But I took a babysitting job, agreed to judge an FCCLA competition and got the MOST wicked flu ever. So I'm. . . kinda cheating :( (again!)

My very first Olive the Things outfit was these gold glitter leggings and glitter onesie. And they're still in my shop while supplies last! I love using spoonflower for my printed fabrics, but I love using fun metallics I find at the fabric store as well.

So sorry I didn't do anything new!! But I do want to see what gold glitter projects you have going on! Link 'em up! Even if they're not new, we'd still love to see them!

And our upcoming months are!!!
April: Floral print fashion post
May: Strawberries

When we were dating I introduced Adam to the wonderful world of sushi, and he has become a huge fan! So for our ultimate date, we would definitely get some sushi.

We would probably invite some friends. Adam really loves our friends Brandy and Tony, and though we haven't been able to meet up with them in a LOOOOONG time, I know our ultimate date would have to include them.

Next we would probably hit up a movie. That might sound dull to most, but after a year of breastfeeding Axel we were kind of out of the habit of going to movies. We're just starting to get babysitters and go out to the movies again!

And then for dessert we would definitely get some Red Mango fro-yo. It's been Adam's favorite dessert place since we were dating, and I liked it a lot. Once they added their sweeter flavors (hello chocolate!!) I've been just as in love with it as he has!

For Valentine's Day we don't go out (thanks to the weirdest V Day ever here) and so I do a special family dinner. I pull out all the stops and don't give myself a budget. It's always cheaper than eating out, even if I spend like $30 on the whole meal. This year we had brisket, baked potatoes and ceasar salad. Not my fanciest, but maybe my yummiest!! :)

Next month we're doing What Would You Do With GOLD GLITTER. I am so excited. Please join us and link up!

There's one thing I love about winter and it's MINI SKIRTS!!!! Huh?? Well since I'm LDS and I've been through the temple, I can't wear clothing above my knee, shorts or skirts. But in the winter, I can layer to stay warm, and that means mini skirts over leggings! And I love it.

But I did not take a picture of that for today. Ha! I faced my fears and wore leggings as pants. Although it helped that these are actually yoga pants. I like how yoga pants are thicker and have a wider waist band than most leggings I have encountered.

So this isn't super innovative fashion, but it's what I would do, not what I'm telling you to do ;)

In 2013 I did a goal each month. I actually worked on all of them, accomplished most of them! In 2014 I wrote a goal for each quarter and I did NONE of them. Eek!

This year I want to pick a word to focus on all year, but work on a different aspect of it each month. I hope this will work better than last year!!

So I gave it very little thought (because it just sort of popped into my mind) and I came up with. . .

This year I want to grow my business, grow my family and grow my spirituality. I'm starting with the last one in January by reading the Book of Mormon in one month. At least that's the plan. 18 pages a day is no joke!!

Anyway, Happy New Year!!!! I'll try and stop by this place as often as I can, but in order for somethings to grow, other things have to shrink. We made our annual pepparkaka hus (gingerbread house) using a set from IKEA and leftover candy from Halloween! A few days after Halloween I went through the candy bucket and pulled out anything I thought would be good for our ginger bread house. I wanted to buy some peppermint sticks to use also, but we didn't get around to it. Oh well!

Adam doesn't like to waste frosting. So he made it snow at our house! Hahaha!!

Then I wanted to make my "clean" pumpkin bread into gingerbread. This was not super successful. Oh it's totally yummy, just not very gingerbread tasting. More like really rich spice cake. I swapped the pumpkin for applesauce, the honey for molasses and the spices for ginger and a little pumpkin pie spice. And I still put in chocolate chips! Any ideas for making it taste more like gingerbread???
How much work do you have to do to be a work from home mom? Am I even allowed to write this post? Well, I'm going to anyway. Truth is I make about 4-10 baby/toddler clothing items a week. Which is way more than I thought I would be capable of in the beginning! But it looks like we do get faster at things the more times we do them, go figure.

So I thought it would be fun to document my day. Because people act like it's so hard to do this, but it's really not so hard. And that makes me think maybe I'm doing it wrong??? You tell me.

Between 6-7am Olivia comes in my room (writing this at 7:15 on a Friday morning and no sign of her! This is going to be a good day) and we snuggle and watch netflix until I get up the will to <strike>live</strike> shower. I shower and she keeps watching what she's watching. This week it's Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, but only the Donald Duck part!

After I shower and dress (I only wash my hair on Sunday and Wednesday) we're downstairs for breakfast. Olivia eats "plain oatmeal" (raw oatmeal with milk and brown sugar) and I make a pot of cooked oatmeal for Axel, and maybe me depending on how much he wants to eat. I drink two glasses of water before I eat anything (but that belongs in my diet post, not my work post. Sorry) I also unload the dishwasher from the night before so that my dirty dishes have somewhere to go. This system is my favorite.

Axel gets up around 8 if it's a preschool day. I get the feeling he doesn't enjoy this. If left alone he'll sleep until 9 sometimes (He did today!). He eats, Olivia gets dressed for school and we're out the door by 8:55 (and even then sometimes we're early.)

Now I have two free hours with the worlds easiest one-year-old. So I lock the baby gate and he plays while I sew (my work station is in the hallway right next to the two kid bedrooms so we're all sort of in the same space but still separate enough to not bug each other) Yesterday I had no orders (except for five orders, but no sweatshirt fleece yet, thanks to the longest wait ever from fabric.com!) so it was just me and Axel time. We read all of his books and snuggled. When I do sew I keep his pants next to me, and if he comes over to pull out the fabric scraps from my serger, I ask "are you ready to get dressed?" and he runs away to play.

After preschool is lunch time. yep.

After lunch we play for a little bit or watch a little show. Axel takes a nap at 1. Olivia only gets 1 1/2 hours of quiet time, so we have alone time before or after quiet time, just depends. Yesterday we played play doh for an hour and then she had quiet time and fell asleep. During this time I either sew or cut. I love to cut while watching TV, it's my favorite.

When the kids are up, we hang out together, wait for dad to come home OR we have a babysitter and I do more work, like run to the post office or draft a new pattern. Then around 4:30 or 5, Olivia and I cook dinner while Adam tries to keep Axel from screaming. He never eats dinner, but if he's not throwing food on the floor by 5 or 5:30 watch out!

We eat dinner and then one parent takes the kids to play or bathe and the other cleans the kitchen. Usually I do the kitchen because I need a break from kids. After that I put Olivia to bed and Adam takes Axel. Always. Olivia and I like to read for 30 minutes or so. We just finished the Kirsten American Girl books.

And then I work some more. I sew if I need to sew, but usually I cut out a lot of stuff while we watch TV together. If I can get everything cut out at night sewing is so much easier during the day. I go to bed at like 10pm.

Somedays, if I have no orders or I just need it, I announce it's a no work day. And then all the times I wrote about working, I usually do some cleaning. My house may not be perfect, but I really need some order. Downstairs is always 10 (kid free) minutes away from being spotless, even if that means hiding all the clutter in the stair well.

And if things get overwhelming, Adam takes the kids for few hours on Saturday and that's usually all I need to catch up. It will be interesting to see how I handle things as my business grows.

I don't feel guilty working while my children play in the next room over, because I worked full time when Olivia was a baby so I know what a privileged it is just to be near them. I still change the poopy diapers and I can always stop what I'm doing to give a hug and kiss the owie. I think for now, it's the perfect set up. Once a month, Aubrey and I come together to ask, What would you do with. . . and then <strike>we </strike>Aubrey comes up with something awesome and we each do a recipe, a craft or a shopping trip! 96% of the time, we don't know what each other is doing until we read our posts!

Every now and then I come up with a pretty good idea, and this month I picked cranberries! I lurve cranberries. The tartness and the color make it perfect for the holiday season!

I'm not going to lie, I'm cheating a little bit with this post. Not really doing anything new and I'm only telling you what I have done since business is booming and I'm a busy mama.

First, if you haven't done it before, you GOTTA try making your own cranberry sauce. One year my brother made it from scratch instead of using a can and it's so good and so easy, I'll never go back. Click here for the recipe.

Second, cranberry salsa. My aunt makes this all the time for our holiday parties and I LOVE it.

1-12 oz pkg fresh cranberries
1/2 c sugar (or less)
1 medium jalapeno (be careful! This is sometimes too hot for me, depending on the heat of that particular jalapeno, so maybe start with less if you're sensitive to heat)
1 green onion
1-2 T fresh cilantro
1/4 tsp cumin
Put
all ingredients into a food processor. Process until mixture is
coarsly chopped. Store in fridge over night to blend. Serve with
cracker and cream cheese if desired.

I don't even like serving it
with cream cheese (crazy because I love cream cheese!) because its just
so fresh on its own. Thanks to my aunt Linda for giving me this
recipe. What I love about it is the tangy flavor, it feels healthy and
fresh (don't you just crave healthy and fresh after eggnog and like five
brownies?) and its red and green. Hello? Christmas.

Next month, we're doing GINGERBREAD!!!!! And I'm so excited because I have a really fun idea for it. Join us. Do a craft or recipe, write it up and link it up! We love company. ;)

In the mean time, if you have a cranberry post to share with us, link it up baby!
1. I love Halloween, until I don't. That's usually a few days before Halloween (not very convenient!) but this year it was right about perfect. And I think it's because Halloween landed on a Friday. When it falls on a Monday or Tuesday we celebrate the weekend before so I feel like it should be over, but it just. Keeps. Going. Glad it's over now ;)

2. Every afternoon nap time and at bed time I pick out four or five mini candy bars and eat them. I haven't gained any weight, but I haven't lost any either. I've got to knock it out pronto!

3. I love Thanksgiving, but I don't love the gratitude posts on social media. Gratitude belongs to the person who gave it to you. You're thankful for your husband? Say a prayer and tell your husband. Write it in a journal. Otherwise it feels like bragging to me. And I think some things we're grateful for can really hurt others who don't have those things. It just makes the comparison problem of social media easier to get sucked into.

4. Not only am I listening to Christmas music, but Olivia is watching The Year Without a Santa Claus right now! I'm actually impressed that she remembered it from last year and started begging me to watch it.

5. Adam keeps begging me to get a new Christmas tree. I don't know why! Ours is small (5 foot, $20 special from Wal Mart like 6 years ago) but our space is small too, so it fits. I don't think it's the size that makes a tree, but the beauty of it.

I don't remember if I loved fabric before that (who can remember that far back!?!) but I know that I loved using that box of fabric to make . . . oh gee, lots of things. I don't know if you can really name what I made. Maybe crap? Ha! I wasn't allowed to use a sewing needle (At least not at my friends house, my mom probably would have let me) so we stapled a lot of fabric together to make clothes for our toys.

I got a child's sewing machine when I was 8 (guessing). It was broken half the time and I really needed something better. I dropped out of dance classes to take sewing classes when I was 9 and then for my 10th birthday I got my very own sewing machine! It's the one I still use today (well, as soon as I get it tuned up, I'll be using it again!).

I've done a lot of "crafting" (hate that word, I'm an ARTIST, not a crafter) Crochet, knitting, needle point, etc etc. But I feel like I always go back to sewing. I majored in Family and Consumer Science (the new name for Home Ec) I took a lot of cooking, interior design and sewing. Funny thing, I didn't take pattern making because the class intimated me too much. And now I make my own patterns for every piece in my shop! If I could go back in time. . .

All this to say, sometimes I feel like a fraud. Like who am I to try and make a mark in the baby/toddler clothing world? But when I look back at my story, I almost wonder if I ever had a choice?

What is my goal? I would love to make 2-3 sales a week. I don't know if I can handle more than that, but that is a bridge we'll cross when we get there! And sometimes I wonder if I should just make these clothes for my own kids and would that be enough? But I think, no. It wouldn't. I'm just living on this high I get from sharing my looks with the world (or the small section of the world I share with on instagram!)

What is your life dream? That hobby you just can't get away from?
And that's when I made this. I just didn't get around to posting it until now. Oops!

This is such a simple recipe, so it's fun to get your kids in on the action, especially if they're any good at peeling apples. Olivia isn't, but that didn't stop her from giving it the ole college try.

We peeled and cored 10 apples and then I just kind of took it from there, with a giant scoop of creamy honey, lots of cinnamon and a couple glugs of my imitation vanilla (I know, I know, my argument is that I don't really bake and I'm not that picky!) Cooked that sucker in my crockpot for 4 hours on high and then mashed it with a potato masher.

It was SO yummy, but not very pretty. Okay FINE, yes I really just forgot to take a picture. But it still wasn't pretty, so you're not missing out.

(Hey! I've been working on uploading all of my iPad pictures to my picasa web album and check out the gif they made with these pictures. Equal parts creepy and cool that they do that with out me telling them too. . . )

Last weekend was LDS General Conference, which means that all around the world, moms and dads are making yummier than usual breakfasts for their families. (I've always suspected this, but instagram confirms.) We're also listening to the prophet and apostles teach us about the doctrines of Christ. Good food just goes great with church on TV (and pajamas if you weren't raised by my father, who insisted we get dressed to help us better pay attention)

Well, I'm ashamed to say I've never really been one of those people. I just don't like baking! Pancakes are even more work than I want to do on a regular basis. But dang it if those instagram photos didn't get to me, and so in between sessions of conference (we watch four 2 hour sessions of conference spread out on Saturday and Sunday) I whipped up a batch of pumpkin bread.

I'm pretty much in love with the clean banana bread recipe I use, and I couldn't find any pumpkin bread recipes that I liked, so I just swapped out a few ingredients and replaced them with what I wanted. I did pumpkin instead of bananas and applesauce. I did 1/2 c honey instead of my usual 1/4 c, since the bananas and applesauce usually add to the sweetness and I took them out. And instead of the 1T of cinnamon (which I'm always a little hesitant to add that much of, since it covers up the banana flavor) I did 1t each of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. (OR you could do like 1 1/2 Tbs of pumpkin pie spice) I really liked the amount of spice in this bread, but I like a lot of flavor. Adjust to your own liking :)

I usually make my banana bread in a blender, but this dough turned out thicker, my guess is because of the liquid level in the bananas and applesauce vs pumpkin. Who knows. So maybe just make this in a bowl if you try it.

Ingredients:
1 15oz can of pumpkin
1 egg
1/2 c honey
1/4 c oil
1 1/2 c whole wheat flour
1 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cloves
pinch of sea salt
1/4 c semi sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350. Combine wet ingredients, and mix well.
2. Add in dry ingredients (here's a trick I use, if you put the flour on top of the wet ingredients, than add all the powders and sodas on top of that, they wont react until right when you mix it), mix well. Add in chocolate chips and stir until combined.
3. Spray a 9x5 loaf pan with cooking spray and pour batter in. Bake for 45-60 minutes (I like to turn the oven off around minute 50 and then let it sit in the oven for the last 10 minutes, so that there aren't any doughy spots at all!)

And just a reminder before you go off to enjoy your weekend that I'm giving away TWO burlap pennant banners. Sometimes I do giveaways to get more followers (honesty!) and sometimes I really just want to GIVE. This is the second one. I wish I could give one to all of you!

This time last year we were working on packing our apartment and getting ready to move to our house! Our closing kept getting pushed back, and so by the time we got in and got everything painted, it was time to set up Christmas. I've been looking forward to fall decorating ever since then.

So when Aubrey suggested burlap, I was excited to make a decoration for fall.

I picked out this darling burlap with gold foil circles, only to discover it was $15 a yard! Eek! I hoped that I would have enough for a little triangle garland if I just got 1/3 of a yard.

Enough and then some! Why do I always think I need so much more fabric in the store than when I get home??? And it turns out I have enough for several! So I would like to give two away.

If you're interested in making your own, there are LOTS of tutorials. I will tell you that I made my triangles five inches across the top and six inches from top to bottom.

Anyway, on to the pictures:
Aside from the fall decorated shelves, we've got this fun action going on on our door (they didn't stick to the wall very well. Falling spiders, that wasn't freaky. . .)

If you're LDS, you know who Thomas Monson is. Not only do we as members of the church know him to the be the Prophet of God today on the earth, he's also an incredible human being, who is known for his ministering to the individual.

My friend Sierra was posting her personality type as well as the personality types of some of the apostles who were speaking during General Conference yesterday. She posted President Monson's (ESFP) and so I looked up a little test and took it. I'm an ENTJ. I googled it and read a little bit about this personality type. Other than being extroverted, I'm exactly opposite of President Monson.

President Monson's personality really leads him to look at the details and to be concerned with the feelings of others. I'm more big picture and while I understand the feelings of others, they don't really direct my decisions. In church, when we talk about the importance of ministering to the one, I agree! But I also feel so overwhelmed. Looking at all the little details is not my strength.

I think we need all types of people to make this world and this church go round. People who want to focus on the details can do that, knowing there are people like me keeping an eye on the big picture. At the same time, knowing my weakness, I can focus on them a little more and work to be better at ministering to the one.

Everyone is needed, every talent can be used for good (or bad!). Learn about yourself and your talents and practice using them for good. Look at your weaknesses and work on being a little bit better at those things too. That's my goal, anyway.Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06520199684836826209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2796642315326266217.post-19463041218211821992014-10-03T06:00:00.000-07:002014-10-03T06:00:07.027-07:00But I like to try

So for a few days last month, I think everyone on my facebook feed had shared the Colbie Caillat video, Try. And I kind of like the message. . . As a feminist I don't think that a persons' self worth or strength should come from their looks. But what if I like to put a little makeup on? I know that I'm still a worthwhile person while in my pajamas, but I feel more awake and happy if I'm dressed.

And in the same way, I feel better about my day when I have a little makeup on. (I should mention that I have such natural dark circles around my eyes that as a kid people often asked me if I had a black eye. So I'm not just trying to look pretty, I'm trying to not look like an abuse victim) I have a mirror in the kitchen above my dining room table. When I'm feeding my children their meals and I see my reflection in the mirror, it's nice to feel put together and healthy looking.

Wearing makeup and doing my hair and putting on clothes isn't about being a 1950's housewife, but if it helps me feel away and happy, I'm going to keep on "trying".Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06520199684836826209noreply@blogger.com4
